President Donald Trump has stated that Russia has agreed to immediately supply over 300,000 tons of diesel to the US and global markets, in an effort to lower diesel prices ahead of the midterm elections in November. This development comes as prices for diesel—used in agriculture, home heating, and freight transport—have neared record highs ahead of the November 3 congressional elections, which will determine control of Congress. In a social media post, Trump said his conversation with President Vladimir Putin was highly successful, resulting in an agreement for Russia to supply diesel immediately. On Friday, shortly after a telephone conversation between the two leaders, Putin's representative Kirill Dmitriev praised the cooperation between Russia and the US in the diesel and energy sectors in a post on the social media platform X.Trump stated that Russia would supply an additional 500,000 tons of diesel in November, followed immediately by a further supply of one million tons. According to Trump, additional diesel would be supplied thereafter, depending on the status of Russia's diesel refineries; these refineries have sustained damage from attacks during Russia's war against Ukraine.
This unusual development comes at a time when the United States has imposed sanctions on Russian energy companies due to the war in Ukraine, which began in February 2022. On Friday, the US Treasury Department issued a general license permitting the import of Russian diesel until April 7 of next year.Diesel prices have surged by 70 percent this year following the outbreak of the conflict involving the US, Israel, and Iran, raising concerns about rising inflation. This increase coincides with two significant measures recently taken by Trump to boost diesel supplies: pressuring allied nations to release emergency reserves and expanding access to tax-exempt "red diesel," which is typically used in agricultural machinery.
