We are continuously falling behind in agriculture; an agricultural emergency should be declared in the country, demands Khalid Mahmood Khokhar, President of Kissan Ittehad.
The President of the Kissan Ittehad (Farmers' Union) stated that farmers have yet to receive payment for their sugarcane, even though this year’s production is 16 percent higher—the largest sugarcane harvest in the country's history. He questioned why the government fails to make timely decisions, noting that sugarcane farmers are so distressed they cannot sleep at night. Khalid Mahmood Khokhar remarked that sugarcane farmers were exploited in 2017; the government failed to export sugar in a timely manner, causing unnecessary delays. Sugar was only exported after the farmers had already suffered economic losses. He added that in Pakistan, the agricultural sector is frequently used as a tool for political maneuvering. He further observed that while food security has become the top priority globally, Pakistan’s rulers choose to play politics over flour—all while other nations are providing substantial subsidies to their agricultural sectors.
